“"The practice exams closely matched the certification objectives and helped me feel fully prepared for the SAFe POPM exam."”
Michael
Senior Product Owner
The SAFe Product Owner/Product Manager (POPM) certification is issued by Scaled Agile, Inc. for people who define, prioritize, and deliver product work inside organizations using the Scaled Agile Framework. It suits Product Owners who work with a single Agile team and Product Managers who guide a whole Agile Release Train. Candidates attend an official two day course, then sit a timed, closed book exam covering PI Planning, iteration execution, and product leadership.
POPM confirms that you understand how product roles operate inside SAFe, not just in a single Scrum team. The exam tests whether you can connect the Lean-Agile mindset to daily decisions: how a Product Manager shapes the Solution Vision and roadmaps, how a Product Owner turns features into stories, and how both roles support a Program Increment from planning through Inspect and Adapt.
Scaled Agile also offers an AI-Empowered edition of this course and exam. Its training page lists a slightly different passing score from the standard study guide, so confirm which version your course provider enrolls you in.
There is no separate experience gate, but you cannot sit the exam on its own. Access comes through the official SAFe Product Owner/Product Manager course, delivered by Scaled Agile or an authorized partner. Completing the course gives you access to the exam through your Learning Plan, and attending the course does not guarantee a pass. Training partners commonly recommend prior exposure to Agile or SAFe, such as Leading SAFe, but recommended is not the same as required.
According to Scaled Agile’s study guide, the exam has these characteristics:
45 questions, multiple choice with a single correct answer
90 minutes, with the timer shown once questions appear
Closed book, web based, with no outside assistance
A passing score of 80%, which works out to 36 correct answers
Unanswered questions marked incorrect
Automatic submission when the timer ends
You must accept the Candidate Agreement before starting. Scaled Agile also provides a practice test with the same question count, timebox, and domain areas, with unlimited attempts. Scaled Agile states that details can change at any time, so check the current study guide before exam day.
The exam is built around five domains, each tied to a lesson in the course:
Product Owner/Product Management Roles and Responsibilities (14 to 16%): SAFe for product roles, the Lean-Agile mindset, value streams, and the responsibilities of each role.
PI Planning Preparation (21 to 24%): the Solution Vision, Solution and PI Roadmaps, customer centric features, and the ART Backlog and Kanban.
Leadership for PI Planning (14 to 16%): PI Objectives, managing dependencies, and managing risks.
Iteration Execution (30 to 32%): stories and story maps, iteration planning, Team Kanban and Team Sync, backlog refinement, iteration review and retrospective, and the Continuous Delivery Pipeline.
PI Execution (14 to 16%): sync events, the System Demo, the Innovation and Planning Iteration, and Inspect and Adapt.
Iteration Execution carries the most weight, followed by PI Planning Preparation. Together they account for more than half of the exam.
Registration runs through the course, not the exam alone. Because course prices are set by each training partner, the total cost varies by region and provider. Your registration normally covers the first two exam attempts if you take them within 60 days of finishing the course. To register, pick an authorized course from Scaled Agile’s event calendar, complete both days, and follow the instructions in your Learning Plan to begin the exam.
After two failed attempts, retakes are available for a fee: $50 for an unproctored exam or $495 for a proctored one. The first retake is available immediately, the second after 10 days, and the third after 30 days. Every additional retake requires a 30 day wait.
The certification is valid for one year and renews annually without re-examination. Scaled Agile’s certification page lists a $195 USD annual renewal, and some sources also mention continuing education units. Renewal terms can change, so confirm them on the official site.
POPM is a role based credential for people in organizations that run SAFe. It is most relevant to Product Owners, Product Managers, Business Analysts, and Scrum Masters moving into product roles on an Agile Release Train. It will carry little weight in teams that do not use SAFe, but it signals fluency in PI Planning and backlog practices where SAFe is the operating model. Scaled Agile’s related Agile Product Management exam is a natural next step for people moving toward portfolio or product strategy work.
Preparing with practice tests
The official exam rewards scenario judgment more than memorized terms. Working through free practice questions on AllExamQuestions.com alongside the course material can help you find weak domains, especially Iteration Execution, and get used to answering under a 90 minute limit. Treat them as a supplement to the official course and Scaled Agile’s own practice test.
