“"I found the practice exams especially useful for understanding how Scrum fits into the broader SAFe framework. They helped me think beyond individual sprints and focus on enterprise-level delivery."”

The SAFe Scrum Master (SSM) exam is the certification test from Scaled Agile, Inc. for people who serve as Scrum Masters, team coaches, or servant leaders for Agile teams working inside the Scaled Agile Framework. It is now delivered as the AI Empowered SAFe Scrum Master exam. It checks whether you can support a team within an Agile Release Train, from PI Planning through iteration execution to the Inspect and Adapt event, and whether you can use AI tools responsibly in that role.
Scrum Master credentials from other bodies focus mostly on one team and one Scrum framework. The SSM is different because it tests the role inside a larger system. A SAFe Scrum Master has to coordinate with other teams on the same Agile Release Train, prepare the team for PI Planning, and help the team deliver toward shared PI Objectives.
Scaled Agile has refreshed the course and exam to include AI content. Candidates now face questions on AI basics and terminology, writing prompts, and the risks of AI use, alongside the traditional facilitation and coaching material. If you hold an older SAFe 6 SSM credential, Scaled Agile has published an upgrade path, so check its support articles before deciding whether to take a fresh course or upgrade.
Scaled Agile’s course materials list no formal prerequisites, and anyone may attend the course regardless of experience. Providers do recommend some background in Agile or Scrum and in working with software or product teams. Some training partners state their own conditions, so confirm with whichever partner you book through.
Exam access is tied to the course. You complete the SAFe Scrum Master course, then open the exam from your Learning Plan after accepting the Candidate Agreement.
The current official exam details are:
45 questions in multiple choice, single select format
90 minutes, timed, with the exam submitted automatically when the timer ends
Passing score of 80%, based on the number of correctly answered questions
Web based, closed book, with no outside assistance
Unanswered questions marked as incorrect
Some training partner pages and older study guides still quote a 73% passing score. That figure belonged to the earlier SAFe 6 version of the exam. Scaled Agile states that details can change at any time, so treat its own support page as the source of truth.
Scaled Agile also provides an official practice test with the same question count, difficulty, time limit, and domain areas as the exam. It allows unlimited attempts, though passing it does not guarantee passing the exam. An optional paid exam prep course is available as well.
The exam covers six domains, each tied to a lesson in the course:
Introducing Scrum in SAFe (10 to 12%): basic Agile and Scrum concepts, Scrum values, and what an Agile Team looks like in SAFe.
Characterizing the role of the Scrum Master (21 to 23%): defining the role, facilitating team events, collaboration and conflict resolution techniques, and the traits of high performing teams.
Participating in PI Planning (14 to 16%): the steps of PI Planning, drafting PI Plans, assessing risks, and why committing to PI Objectives matters.
Facilitating the Iteration Execution (21 to 23%): iteration planning, Team Sync, tracking progress, backlog refinement, the Iteration Review, and the CALMR approach to DevOps and Release on Demand.
Finishing the PI (14 to 16%): coaching the IP iteration, the six steps of the problem solving workshop, and preparing the team for Inspect and Adapt.
Augmenting the Scrum Master Role with AI (12 to 14%): AI basics, prompting, responsible use and risks, and applying AI to Scrum Master work. This domain draws on all five lessons.
Domains two and four carry the most weight, so facilitation and iteration execution deserve the largest share of your study time.
Registration runs through the course rather than a standalone exam booking. In general, you enroll in an AI Empowered SAFe Scrum Master course with Scaled Agile or an authorized training partner, finish the course, and then open the exam from your Learning Plan. The first two attempts are included in the course registration or exam fee when taken within 60 days of course completion or exam purchase.
Course prices vary by country, partner, and delivery format, so no single fee applies everywhere. Check the Scaled Agile website or your chosen partner for current pricing and exact enrollment steps.
If you fail both included attempts, a third attempt is available immediately. A fourth attempt requires a 10 day wait after the third, and a fifth requires 30 days. Any further attempts each need a 30 day wait. Additional attempts cost $50 for the unproctored exam and $495 for the proctored version.
The certification is valid for one year and renewed annually. Renewal terms and fees can change, so verify them with Scaled Agile when your date approaches.
The SSM is recognized mainly in organizations that run SAFe, such as large software, finance, telecom, and public sector programs where many teams ship together on a shared cadence. Typical roles include Scrum Master, team level Agile coach, and delivery lead on an Agile Release Train. It also serves as a stepping stone toward SAFe Advanced Scrum Master and Release Train Engineer paths. Its value depends on whether your employer or target employer uses SAFe, so check job listings in your market before investing.
Because the exam rewards scenario judgment more than memorization, working through questions helps you spot weak domains early. The free practice tests on AllExamQuestions.com can complement Scaled Agile’s official practice test and course materials by giving you extra questions to review before exam day.
