What to Expect on the 300-620 DCACI  Exam

The 300-620 DCACI exam runs 90 minutes and leans heavily on scenario interpretation rather than flat recall. Cisco doesn’t publish an exact question count or cut score for this exam — third-party estimates put it around 55–65 questions, scored on Cisco’s standard 300–1000 scale with a variable passing threshold rather than a fixed percentage. Expect a mix of multiple-choice, drag-and-drop matching (especially for mapping ACI constructs to their function), and a handful of topology-based questions where you’re shown an APIC GUI screenshot or a fabric diagram and asked what’s misconfigured.

The pacing feels tight if you’re translating NX-OS habits into ACI’s object model on the fly. Most candidates who’ve worked hands-on with APIC find the time pressure manageable; candidates coming from a pure CLI/traditional networking background often run short on time because they’re mentally re-deriving concepts like contracts and EPGs instead of recognizing them instantly.

Domain Breakdown

The exam is built on six weighted domains:

Domain

Weight

Core Topics

1.0 ACI Fabric Infrastructure

20%

Topology and hardware, Virtual APIC, ACI Object Model, faults/events/audit log/health score, fabric discovery, ACI policies (access, fabric), logical constructs (tenant, application profile, VRF, bridge domain, EPG, contracts, Endpoint Security Groups)

2.0 ACI Packet Forwarding

15%

Endpoint learning, bridge domain settings (unicast routing, Layer 2 unknown unicast, ARP flooding)

3.0 External Network Connectivity

20%

Layer 2 connectivity (STP/MCP basics, EPG port bindings), Layer 3 Out

4.0 Integrations

15%

Virtual networking integration (VMware vCenter DVS, Nutanix VMM), resolution/deployment immediacy, service graph

5.0 ACI Management

20%

Out-of-band/in-band management, traditional and AI-assisted monitoring (Syslog, SNMP, Nexus Dashboard Insights), config backup/restore, AAA/RBAC, upgrades

6.0 ACI Anywhere

10%

Multi-Pod, Multi-Site, Remote Leaf (conceptual, not deep config) Implementing Cisco Application Centric Infrastructure v1.2 ( ... +5

Domains 1, 3, and 5 together make up 60% of the exam — fabric fundamentals, external connectivity, and management are where you should concentrate study time, not Multi-Pod/Multi-Site, which stays at a descriptive level.

Where the blueprint shifted in v1.2

Cisco revised the exam to v1.2, and the changes matter if you’re studying from an older guide. Endpoint Security Groups (ESGs) were added under domain 1.0, Nutanix VMM integration was added alongside VMware DVS under domain 4.0, and Nexus Dashboard Insights was folded into domain 5.0’s monitoring objectives alongside Syslog/SNMP. If your study notes only mention vzAny and preferred groups without ESGs, or only VMware VDS without Nutanix, they’re out of date.

The Topics Candidates Consistently Underestimate

Contract direction and filter logic. Candidates memorize “contracts control traffic between EPGs” but stumble when asked to trace a specific packet through provider/consumer roles, reverse filter ports, and vzAny scoping. This shows up repeatedly as scenario questions rather than definition questions.

Bridge domain settings and their forwarding consequences. Unicast routing, Layer 2 unknown unicast (flood vs. hardware proxy), and ARP flooding interact with each other in ways that aren’t obvious from a single Cisco Live slide. A question might describe symptoms — intermittent connectivity loss after enabling a setting — and expect you to identify which bridge domain knob is misconfigured.

L3Out complexity. The exam explicitly excludes transit routing and VRF route leaking from 300-620’s scope, which candidates sometimes don’t register — they over-prepare on advanced L3Out scenarios that belong to the 350-601 DCCOR or 300-630 DCACIA exams instead, while underpreparing on the basic L3Out configuration that is in scope.

VMM integration nuances. Resolution immediacy and deployment immediacy settings (immediate vs. on-demand) are a small objective on paper but a common source of wrong answers, because the difference only becomes intuitive once you’ve actually watched endpoint learning behave differently under each setting.

How to Use Practice Tests Effectively for 300-620 DCACI Exam

Because DCACI questions are scenario-driven rather than pure recall, drilling flashcard-style Q&A undersells how the  exam works. When you miss a practice question here, don’t just note the correct letter — trace why the distractors are wrong. If a question involves a bridge domain misconfiguration, rebuild the scenario mentally (or in a lab/sandbox) rather than memorizing “answer C.”

Pay particular attention to questions that pair a GUI screenshot or topology with a symptom description. These mirror the exam’s actual format more closely than straight definition questions, and they’re the format where test-takers coming from CLI-only backgrounds lose the most points. If you have access to the Cisco dCloud or a personal ACI sandbox, validate any domain where you score below 80% on practice questions by actually configuring it — ACI’s logical model rewards hands-on repetition more than reading Start your Security, Professional (JNCIP-SEC) exam practice today.

Common Mistakes That Cause Retakes

  • Treating EPGs and bridge domains as interchangeable — confusing Layer 2 segmentation (bridge domain) with policy grouping (EPG) is a frequent source of wrong answers on forwarding questions.

  • Skipping ACI Anywhere (Multi-Pod/Multi-Site/Remote Leaf) entirely because it’s only 10% — enough questions draw from it that a zero-prep approach to this domain alone can cost a marginal pass.

  • Studying only the GUI workflow and ignoring the underlying object model (tenant → application profile → EPG → contract hierarchy), which the exam tests independently of GUI navigation.

  • Assuming NX-OS troubleshooting instincts transfer directly — ACI’s declarative policy model means some “obvious” NX-OS fixes don’t apply the same way.

  • Underestimating the management domain (20% weight) by treating AAA, RBAC, and upgrade procedures as an afterthought.

300-620 DCACI  Study Timeline by Starting Experience Level

New to ACI, solid traditional networking background: Budget 6–8 weeks. Spend the first two to three weeks building object-model fluency (tenant/AP/EPG/contract relationships) before touching integrations or ACI Anywhere, since the later domains build on that vocabulary.

Already working with ACI in production (even partially): 2–4 weeks is usually , focused on filling specific gaps — most production engineers haven’t touched Nutanix VMM integration or Multi-Site concepts day-to-day, so that’s where to concentrate.

Retaking after a failed attempt: Identify which domain(s) pulled your score down using your score report’s section breakdown — Cisco provides this — and rebuild from there rather than re-studying everything uniformly. Most retake failures cluster in External Network Connectivity or ACI Management, not the fabric fundamentals domain.
