What to Expect on the 300-510 SPRI  Exam

The 300-510 SPRI exam runs 90 minutes and serves as the concentration exam for CCNP Service Provider — pass it alone and you also earn the standalone Cisco Certified Specialist – Service Provider Advanced Routing Implementation credential. Cisco doesn’t publish an exact question count or passing score for this exam, so treat any site that quotes you a precise number (like “65 questions, 825 to pass”) with skepticism; those figures are typically guesses extrapolated from older exam versions, not current official data.

What you can count on: this is not a recall-heavy exam. Cisco leans hard into scenario and troubleshooting items — partial configs, show-command output, and “what’s wrong here” style questions — rather than straight definition-matching. If your BGP and IS-IS knowledge is purely theoretical, the exam will expose that quickly. The exam is currently on version 1.1, which added troubleshooting-specific objectives (OSPF multiarea, IS-IS multilevel) that weren’t as prominent in v1.0, so if you’re studying from an older guide, double-check it reflects the current blueprint.

Domain Breakdown

Domain

Weighting

1.0 Unicast Routing

35%

2.0 Multicast Routing

15%

3.0 Routing Policy and Manipulation

25%

4.0 MPLS and Segment Routing

25%

Unicast Routing alone is over a third of the exam, and it’s not just “know BGP” — it spans OSPF-vs-IS-IS comparisons, multiarea/multilevel troubleshooting for both protocols, BGP security mechanisms (TTL security, max-prefix, dampening, FlowSpec), and IPv6 transition techniques including 6PE. Don’t let the shorter Multicast Routing section fool you into deprioritizing it — it’s narrow but it’s tested with  troubleshooting scenarios, not trivia.

The Topics Candidates Consistently Underestimate

Segment routing v6 (SRv6). Most SPRI candidates come from a traditional MPLS/LDP background and treat SR-MPLS as “good enough” prep for the whole MPLS and Segment Routing domain. SRv6 is a conceptually different model — no label stack, routing based on IPv6 addressing with Segment Identifiers — and candidates who skip it tend to lose points across multiple questions in this 25%-weighted domain.

Routing policy language versus route-maps. Objective 3.1 asks you to compare RPL and route-maps, which means the exam expects you to reason about when and why you’d choose one over the other on IOS XR versus IOS/IOS XE platforms — not just recite route-map syntax. Candidates who only practiced on one platform’s CLI get tripped up here.

BGP FlowSpec and dynamic neighbors. These sit buried in objective 1.5 alongside more familiar topics like dampening and communities, and they’re easy to skim past in study guides. They show up often enough in scenario questions that skipping them is a  risk.

How to Use Practice Tests Effectively for 300-510 SPRI  Exam

Because SPRI questions are scenario-driven, don’t just drill isolated flashcard-style questions. When you miss a practice question, reconstruct the full topology or config context in your head (or on paper) before reading the explanation — the exam rewards pattern recognition across a whole scenario, not recall of a single fact. Time yourself on blocks of multicast and routing-policy questions specifically; these domains have fewer questions overall, so a few slow, uncertain answers do disproportionate damage to your pacing.

Mix platform contexts deliberately. If a practice set only shows IOS XR syntax, supplement it mentally (or with Cisco documentation) for IOS XE equivalents, since the exam doesn’t commit to one platform throughout Test your knowledge with a free Implementing and Configuring Cisco Identity Services Engine practice test.

Common Mistakes That Cause Retakes

  • Treating MPLS traffic engineering and SR-TE as the same thing and under-preparing for the SR-specific configuration and verification commands.

  • Walking in with only CCNP Enterprise-level BGP knowledge and assuming it transfers directly — SPRI’s BGP objectives go deeper into service-provider-specific scaling and convergence features.

  • Skipping multicast because it’s “only 15%” — a weak multicast section drags down an otherwise strong score more than people expect.

  • Memorizing route-map syntax without understanding RPL, then freezing on IOS XR-flavored questions.

300-510 SPRI  Study Timeline by Starting Experience Level

New to service provider routing (strong CCNP Enterprise background, no SP experience): Plan on 8 to 12 weeks. Spend the first few weeks specifically on SP-context BGP (scaling, convergence, FlowSpec) and segment routing fundamentals before touching practice questions.

Working SP network engineer with hands-on MPLS/BGP experience: 4 to 6 weeks is typically enough, with most of that time going toward SRv6 and RPL if your day-to-day work hasn’t touched them yet.

Retaking after a fail: Before scheduling again, pull apart which domain sank you. Because Unicast Routing is worth 35%, a weak score there usually explains a fail by itself — 2 to 3 focused weeks rebuilding that domain, combined with fresh scenario practice, is a reasonable retake runway.
