The Italian Proficiency Test Online Post Intermedio B2 is a label for online Italian assessments pitched at CEFR level B2, the upper intermediate band. It is not one branded certification owned by a single examining body, so format, scoring, and cost depend on the test you actually sit. It suits learners who already manage everyday Italian and want proof of independent ability for study, work, or life in Italy italian proficiency test avanzato C1 practice exam

What this test measures

CEFR B2 describes a learner who can follow the main ideas of complex texts on both concrete and abstract topics. A B2 speaker can understand the main ideas of a complex text on concrete and abstract subjects, and in practice that also means taking part in discussions with a fair degree of spontaneity. Post Intermedio is simply the Italian way of describing this stage, just beyond intermediate and short of advanced.

Because the name is generic, the first job is to find out which test someone is asking you to take. A university may require a specific certificate, an employer may use a short online screener, and a language school may use its own placement tool. All of them can be called a B2 proficiency test, and they are not interchangeable.

Who it is for

There are no universal entry requirements, since no single body sets them. Most candidates are learners who have finished a B1 course or have lived or worked in Italian for some time. One university course description for B2 expects students to have completed an intermediate B1 course or to know the language through living in Italy or regular contact with it. That is a course prerequisite and not a rule for the test itself, so check the conditions of the test you plan to take.

Structure and format

Formats differ a lot, and duration is the clearest example. A full certificate exam can run for hours, for instance the DILI B2 diploma from Florence lasts 3 hours and 50 minutes. A university screening test can be far shorter, as at Genoa, where the combined A2 and B2 test takes 35 minutes. Short online screeners used by employers can be shorter still.

Full certificate exams usually test four skills, which are reading, listening, writing, and speaking. Short online tests often cover only grammar, vocabulary, and comprehension, and some skip speaking altogether. Before you book anything, confirm which skills are tested, whether the test is taken at home or in a test centre, and how results are reported.

Skills and language areas to prepare

Whatever the provider, B2 preparation tends to focus on the same areas:

Reading: newspaper articles, opinion pieces, formal letters, and workplace documents.
Listening: interviews, announcements, lectures, and everyday conversations at natural speed.
Writing: formal and informal emails, short essays, and reports with a clear structure.
Speaking: giving and defending an opinion, describing experiences, and handling unplanned questions.
Grammar: the subjunctive, conditional, passive forms, relative clauses, and reported speech.
Vocabulary: work, education, society, media, health, and the environment.

Certificates employers and universities recognize

If you need an official result, the certificate matters more than the label. Well known Italian options at this level include CILS from the University for Foreigners of Siena, CELI from the University for Foreigners of Perugia, PLIDA from the Dante Alighieri Society, and  from Roma Tre University. For university admission in Italy, non EU applicants for a study visa usually need a B2 certificate issued within the CLIQ quality system. Some universities also accept a dedicated admission test. For 2026 to 2027, CISIA runs the ITA L2 test certifying B2 online in its @CASA format. Rules change each academic year, so confirm them with the university.

Registration

Registration depends entirely on the body that runs the test. Certificate exams are usually booked through the examining institution or an approved centre, with fixed session dates. University tests are normally booked through the admissions office or a consortium portal, and employer screeners are sent to you by invitation. Fees, deadlines, and ID requirements are set by each provider, so always follow the instructions on the official page for your specific test.

Study and career value

A B2 result shows you can work in Italian rather than just get by in it. For study, it is often the minimum language level for degree programmes taught in Italian. For work, it is relevant to roles with Italian speaking customers or colleagues, such as customer support, hospitality, export sales, and translation support. It also marks a sensible step toward C1, which is the level at which complex professional and academic Italian becomes comfortable.

Preparing with practice tests

Practice helps most when it mirrors  task types. Working through reading passages, grammar sets, and timed questions can show you which areas need attention before test day. AllExamQuestions.com is building free Italian B2 practice tests for this purpose, and you can use them alongside past papers from your chosen certificate body. Use them to find weak spots, then return to course material to fix them.
