The Splunk Enterprise Certified Admin exam, code SPLK-1003, tests whether you can handle the daily administration and health of a Splunk Enterprise environment. It is a Professional level exam from Splunk, a Cisco company, and it follows the Splunk Core Certified Power User exam in the certification path. It suits platform administrators, infrastructure engineers and security teams who manage indexers, search heads and forwarders. This page gathers the official details so you can plan your attempt.

What this certification validates

Splunk positions this credential for anyone responsible for supporting the administration and health of a Splunk Enterprise deployment. The blueprint centers on license management, indexes, configuration files, user roles, authentication, distributed search and, most heavily, the many ways data gets into Splunk. In practice, that means knowing how a deployment is built and also how data moves through it: from an input on a forwarder, through the input, parsing and indexing phases, to a searchable event.

Splunk describes three typical audiences. Career builders use it as the natural next step after the Core Power User exam. Platform administrators use it to show they can maintain a healthy environment. Enterprise Security administrators treat it as a stepping stone toward administering a Splunk Enterprise Security deployment. Splunk also notes the exam is best suited to teams whose deployment will not be migrating to Splunk Cloud.

Eligibility and prerequisites

The official prerequisite is the Splunk Core Certified Power User certification. You need to hold that credential before you can complete the Enterprise Certified Admin certification. Some third party study sites describe the Core Certified User exam as the recommended starting point, but Splunk’s own page names Power User, so plan around that. Splunk’s blueprint also suggests two courses from the Enterprise Certified Admin learning path as preparation: Splunk Enterprise System Administration and Splunk Enterprise Data Administration. These are suggested, not required.

Exam structure and format

The exam has 56 multiple choice questions and a total time of 60 minutes. That total includes 3 minutes at the start to read and accept the Splunk Certification Agreement, so your working time is closer to 57 minutes. That is a little over a minute per question, which rewards candidates who recognize configuration behavior quickly instead of reasoning from scratch.

Splunk states that the blueprint topics are general guidelines. Related topics may appear on any delivery of the exam, and the blueprint can change without notice. Always download the current blueprint from Splunk before you finalize your study plan.

Exam domains and weights

The blueprint lists 17 content areas. Three carry 10% each, and the other fourteen carry 5% each.

The 10% areas

  • Splunk Indexes: index structure, bucket types, data integrity checks, indexes.conf options, the fishbucket and data retention policy.

  • Distributed Search: how distributed search works, the roles of search heads and search peers, search head scaling options and configuring a search group.

  • Forwarder Management: the deployment server, deployment apps, deployment clients, client groups and monitoring forwarder management activity.

The 5% areas

  • Platform basics: Splunk components, license types and license violations.

  • Configuration: the configuration directory structure, layering, precedence and using btool to inspect settings.

  • Access: user roles, custom roles, adding users, LDAP integration, other authentication options and multifactor authentication.

  • Getting data in: basic input settings, forwarder types, configuring forwarders, the three phases of indexing, and the full list of input options.

  • Input types: file and directory monitors, network inputs over TCP and UDP, scripted inputs, WMI inputs and the HTTP Event Collector.

  • Input and parsing behavior: default input processing, sourcetype fine tuning, character set encoding, event line breaking, timestamps and time zones, and using Data Preview.

  • Manipulating raw data: props.conf and transforms.conf to mask or delete data, override sourcetype or host, route events to indexes, drop unwanted events, and SEDCMD.

Because the spread is wide and flat, a candidate who skips the lighter areas can lose points quickly. Roughly 70% of the exam sits in the fourteen smaller areas.

Registration process

Splunk’s certification page directs candidates to register through Cisco’s certification platform, and exams are delivered through Pearson VUE. Splunk notes that candidates now use Cisco’s systems for registration, exam history and support. Because that process has changed recently, start from the “Register for Exam” link on Splunk’s certification page and follow the current steps there instead of relying on older guides. For account questions, Splunk’s FAQ lists a certification support contact. Check the Splunk Certification Candidate Handbook for exam day rules, identification requirements and accommodation requests.

Validity and renewal

Splunk certifications run on a three year lifecycle measured from the date of the highest certification passed. If you do not meet the renewal requirements by the expiration date, the certification is marked inactive, though Splunk’s recertification policy describes a 90 day grace period. Renewal options include retaking an exam in the final year of your window or earning a higher level certification in the same track, which for this exam means Splunk Enterprise Certified Architect. Older sources also mention continuing education courses as a renewal path. Splunk revised its recertification policy in 2026, so confirm the current options in the official policy before you plan a renewal.

Career value

This certification points to a specific job: keeping a Splunk Enterprise deployment healthy. Employers who run their own indexers, search heads and forwarder fleets need someone who understands licensing, retention, access control and data onboarding, and the blueprint covers exactly those duties. For security teams, Splunk calls the credential a stepping stone toward administering Splunk Enterprise Security. For infrastructure engineers, it is the step between searching and dashboards on one side and architecting distributed deployments on the other, since the Enterprise Certified Architect is the next certification in the track.

Preparing with practice tests

Reading the blueprint tells you what is covered. Practice questions show you where your recall is weak. The free SPLK-1003 practice tests on AllExamQuestions.com let you work through scenarios on indexes, forwarders, inputs and configuration precedence, then review explanations for the ones you miss. Use your results to decide which of the 17 areas deserve another pass in a lab or in Splunk’s documentation.
