Practice Test 1

Intermediate
50 Questions• 50 minutes

MCD-Level 1 doesn't test whether you can write Java. It tests whether you can look at a Mule flow with a Scatter-Gather wrapped inside a Try scope and correctly predict what happens to the message when one of the routes times out. That distinction catches a lot of experienced backend developers off guard, because Anypoint Studio's low-code flow model behaves nothing like a Spring Boot controller or a BizTalk orchestration, and the exam is built almost entirely around reading and reasoning through flow configurations rather than recalling facts.

What MCD-Level 1 Actually Tests

The exam sits on top of eight practical skill areas, and nearly every question is scenario-based rather than definitional:

  • Anypoint Studio flow fundamentals — sources, processors, the Mule event structure (payload, attributes, variables), and how a message changes as it moves through a flow

  • DataWeave 2.0 — selectors, map, filter, reduce, pluck, type coercion, and multi-input transforms

  • Connectors and modules — HTTP Listener/Requester, Database, File, FTP, the Web Service Consumer for SOAP, and JMS

  • Routing and scopes — Choice, Scatter-Gather, For Each, and Try

  • Error handling — the Mule error type hierarchy, On Error Continue vs. On Error Propagate, and global error handlers

  • Batch processing — Batch Job, Batch Step, and the aggregator

  • API-led basics — reading a RAML definition, the APIkit router, and how API-led layers (system, process, experience) relate to each other

  • Deployment — packaging a Mule application, deploying to CloudHub, and property placeholder precedence

Unlike some Salesforce certifications, MuleSoft does not publish an official percentage breakdown by domain, so any weighting you see, including the one below, is an estimate built from the published exam objectives, not a confirmed split.

Who Actually Takes MCD-Level 1 (Mule 4) Exam

The candidate pool is narrower than "anyone in IT." Three groups dominate it in Official MCD-Level 1 (Mule 4) practice. First, backend and integration developers moving from Java/Spring, .NET, or a legacy ESB like TIBCO or BizTalk into an Anypoint Platform role, often because their employer just signed a MuleSoft contract. Second, people who complete MuleSoft University's free self-paced "Anypoint Platform Development: Fundamentals" course and sit the exam immediately afterward, since Level 1 has no formal prerequisite. Third, junior consultants at MuleSoft/Salesforce implementation partners, where certification counts toward the partner's staffing tier and is often mandated on a deadline rather than chosen voluntarily.

Exam Format and Where the Time Pressure Actually Hits

The exam is closed-book, webcam-proctored through Webassessor, and runs 60 multiple-choice and multiple-select questions in roughly 120 minutes, with a 70% passing score. That works out to about two minutes per question, which sounds comfortable until you hit a question stem that includes eight to fifteen lines of Mule XML or a DataWeave script you have to read carefully before the answer choices even make sense. The  time pressure isn't recalling facts, it's parsing configuration under a clock. Two other format details trip people up specifically on this exam: multiple-select "choose two" questions give no partial credit, and several distractor answers are built by swapping one nested element (for example, putting a <try> around the wrong scope) so skimming the XML instead of tracing it costs points.

How to Use a Free Practice Test for This Exam

Don't treat practice questions as a memorization drill for DataWeave syntax. The higher-value use is tracing the message by hand: for every scenario question involving a flow, write out what the payload and variables look like after each processor before you look at the answer choices. Time yourself at two minutes per question in blocks of 15 to 20 to build the same pacing the exam demands. When you miss a question, don't just note the correct letter, go find the specific documentation page (usually the DataWeave function reference or the error handling reference) that would have made the answer obvious, and read that page in full rather than re-memorizing one question If you're preparing for PCPP1 practice exam, try our online practice test.

Common Mistakes Candidates Make on MCD-Level 1

  • Confusing payload with attributes inside a Transform Message step, especially right after an HTTP or File connector

  • Assuming On Error Propagate behaves like On Error Continue when it comes to whether the flow keeps executing afterward

  • Misreading Scatter-Gather as sequential execution instead of parallel routes with an aggregated result

  • Forgetting property placeholder precedence, where values set in Runtime Manager override a deployable properties file, which in turn overrides the default .yaml

  • Underusing DataWeave functions like pluck and reduce, then getting stuck on questions that expect fluency with them rather than basic map/filter

  • Picking only one answer on "select two" items because the question format is easy to misread under time pressure

Study Tips Specific to MCD-Level 1 (Mule 4) Exam

Work through MuleSoft University's free "Anypoint Platform Development: Fundamentals" course if you haven't, since several exam scenarios are lifted almost directly from its lab exercises. More importantly, install Anypoint Studio and actually rebuild small flows from the practice questions rather than just reading XML on screen; the muscle memory of dragging a Try scope around a Database connector and watching the error handler catch a DB:CONNECTIVITY error sticks far better than reading about it. Use the DataWeave Playground inside Studio to test transforms live rather than trusting your mental model of map versus mapObject. Finally, read MuleSoft's own error handling reference page directly, since a meaningful share of exam questions hinge on where a specific error type sits in the Mule error hierarchy, and that hierarchy is easy to get partially wrong from memory alone.

Your Next Step

Take the free practice test below and note your score broken down by the domains above rather than just your overall percentage. Wherever you're weakest, rebuild the relevant flow type in a free Anypoint Platform trial account before you book your slot on Webassessor. Given that the exam allows up to five attempts with a mandatory 24-hour wait between each, there's no reason to guess your readiness when you can test it directly.
