The AWS Certified Cloud Practitioner (CLF-C02) is AWS's foundational-level certification, built for people who need a broad, high-level understanding of the AWS Cloud without a technical job role attached to it. It suits IT beginners transitioning into cloud careers, as well as non-technical professionals in sales, finance, procurement, or project management who work alongside AWS teams and need to speak the same language.

AWS Certified Cloud Practitioner Exam Overview and Purpose

Cloud Practitioner exists to validate that a candidate understands what the AWS Cloud is, why organizations adopt it, and how core services, security, and billing work together, without requiring hands-on architecture or coding skill. AWS designed it explicitly as an entry point: it confirms someone can explain the value of the AWS Cloud, describe the shared responsibility model, and identify common AWS services for typical use cases. It is not a technical deep-dive exam, and AWS is direct about that: coding, cloud architecture design, troubleshooting, and implementation tasks are explicitly out of scope for this exam.

Eligibility Requirements

There are no mandatory prerequisites. Anyone can register and sit the exam. AWS describes its target candidate as someone with up to six months of exposure to AWS Cloud concepts, but this exposure is a recommendation, not a gate; the certification is regularly earned by candidates with no prior IT background at all.

AWS Certified Cloud Practitioner Exam Structure and Format

The exam runs 90 minutes and includes 65 questions in two formats: standard multiple choice (one correct answer, three distractors) and multiple response (two or more correct answers from five or more options). Of those 65 questions, 50 are scored and 15 are unscored; the unscored items are unidentified and used by AWS to evaluate future exam content, so every question should be treated as if it counts. There's no penalty for guessing, but an unanswered question is automatically marked wrong.

Scoring is reported on a scaled range of 100 to 1,000, with a minimum passing score of 700. AWS uses a compensatory scoring model, meaning a candidate only needs to clear the overall passing threshold rather than pass each content domain individually. The exam can be taken at a Pearson VUE testing center or through online proctoring from home or an office.

Domain Breakdown

CLF-C02 content is organized into four weighted domains:

  • Domain 1: Cloud Concepts (24%) — benefits of the AWS Cloud, design principles, cloud economics, and migration concepts

  • Domain 2: Security and Compliance (30%) — the shared responsibility model, security and compliance concepts, access management, and core security services

  • Domain 3: Cloud Technology and Services (34%) — AWS global infrastructure and the compute, database, network, storage, and AI/ML services candidates are expected to recognize

  • Domain 4: Billing, Pricing, and Support (12%) — pricing models, billing tools, budgeting, and AWS support plan tiers

Security and Compliance plus Cloud Technology and Services together make up nearly two-thirds of the exam, so candidates should weight their study time toward those two areas.

Registration Process

Exams are scheduled through AWS's certification account portal and delivered by Pearson VUE, either in person at a testing center or via online proctoring. Because scheduling steps, ID requirements, and available time slots can change, candidates should confirm the current process directly on AWS's official certification and Pearson VUE scheduling pages rather than relying on third-party walkthroughs. If a candidate fails, AWS requires a 14-day wait before a retake is allowed.

Career Value

Cloud Practitioner is most useful as a credibility signal for people outside core engineering roles, sales, marketing, product management, finance, and project management professionals who work with AWS-based products or teams. AWS also positions it as a stepping stone: candidates who pass it often move on to Associate-level exams like AWS Certified Solutions Architect – Associate, AWS Certified Developer – Associate, or AWS Certified SysOps Administrator – Associate. Earning any AWS certification also unlocks a 50% discount voucher toward a future AWS exam.

How AllExamQuestions Can Help

Since CLF-C02 draws heavily on recognizing services and pricing concepts rather than deep technical reasoning, practicing with multiple choice and multiple response questions is a natural way to check readiness before exam day. AllExamQuestions.com free CLF-C02 practice tests are organized around the same four domains as the official exam guide, so you can see where your weak spots actually are before you pay for the thing.
