What to Expect on the ALPT

The ALPT is built by Arab Academy, a private  Arabic-language institution in Cairo, and it works differently from a typical multiple-choice certification. It’s a computer-adaptive test (CAT): the questions you get next depend on how you answered the last one, so no two test-takers see an identical paper, and the exam doesn’t have a fixed number of questions or a fixed time limit the way a standardized IT or business exam does. It must also start in the presence of an Arab Academy–registered instructor or invigilator, even for individual test-takers working remotely. That’s unusual for an online language test and catches some people off guard when they expect a fully unsupervised sitting.

The test covers only Modern Standard Arabic (الفصحى) — not Egyptian, Gulf, or Levantine colloquial Arabic. If most of your listening practice has come from dialect-heavy media or conversation, that’s a  gap, not a minor one.

Skills Breakdown

Arab Academy doesn’t publish percentage weightings per skill (the adaptive format doesn’t work that way), but the five components and their formats are fixed:

Arab Academy also sells these in tiers for individuals — $70 covers Listening, Reading, and Structure only; $110 adds Writing; $150 (the comprehensive version) adds Speaking. Which tier you need depends on what the institution or employer asking for your ALPT score actually requires, so confirm that before you register.

The Topics Candidates Consistently Underestimate

Case endings (الإعراب). Plenty of learners reach B2-level vocabulary and fluency without ever being rigorously tested on nominative/accusative/genitive case marking, because conversational Arabic — even formal spoken registers — often glosses over it. The Structure section does not. This is usually the single biggest point-loss for otherwise strong candidates.

Passive voice and derived verb forms. Recognizing وزن (verb form/pattern) and converting between active and passive constructions shows up repeatedly in Structure and Reading, and it’s one of the last things self-study learners get comfortable with.

Authentic journalistic register. Reading passages drawn from news-style MSA move faster and use denser vocabulary than textbook Arabic. If your reading practice has stayed inside graded readers, the jump in passage difficulty is noticeable.

Writing cohesion, not vocabulary. The Writing section doesn’t just check if you know words — it checks whether you can link ideas with proper discourse markers (لكن، بالإضافة إلى ذلك، وبالتالي) instead of producing a string of short, disconnected sentences. Graders at B2 expect paragraph-level coherence.

The live Speaking component. Because it’s the last section and conducted with an actual teacher rather than a recorded prompt, many candidates treat it as a formality and under-rehearse it. It’s graded on -time communication, not memorized phrases.

How to Use Practice Tests Effectively for the ALPT

Because the official test is adaptive, the most useful thing practice questions can do is simulate the mix of difficulty you’ll face, not just drill one level in isolation. Work through items that span B1 and B2 difficulty in the same session rather than only B2-labeled questions — that mirrors how the adaptive engine behaves as it narrows in on your level.

For Structure specifically, don’t just check whether your answer was right — go back and identify why the correct case ending or verb form applies. Pattern recognition under time pressure is what the actual Structure section rewards, and that only comes from reviewing your misses, not just counting them.

For Listening, practice with audio at natural broadcast speed rather than slowed-down learner audio. The ALPT doesn’t accommodate pacing preferences.

For Writing, time yourself and write without a dictionary open. The open-ended format means there’s no safety net of multiple-choice options to lean on, so practicing cold is closer to the  conditions.

Common Mistakes That Cause Retakes

• Preparing listening skills on conversational or dialect-influenced audio instead of MSA news-style material

• Treating the Speaking interview as low-stakes and showing up without having spoken Arabic aloud in weeks

• Mixing colloquial vocabulary into Reading or Structure answers where only MSA usage is correct

• Second-guessing case endings instead of applying learned grammatical patterns, which eats time and increases error rate

• Assuming vocabulary breadth alone will carry the Writing section without practicing sentence-linking and paragraph structure

B2 CEFR  Study Timeline

Starting from scratch at an intermediate level (A2–low B1): Expect several months of consistent study — most of this time goes toward building the grammatical foundation (case endings, verb forms) that the Structure section tests directly, alongside steady exposure to MSA listening and reading material.

Already comfortable with B1 coursework or informal MSA exposure: A focused four-to-eight week stretch targeting the specific gaps above — case endings, passive constructions, and timed writing practice — is usually enough to close the distance to a reliable B2 result.

Retaking after a lower-than-expected score: Identify which section pulled the score down (Arab Academy’s result breakdown will show this) and concentrate almost entirely there. A retake driven by a weak Structure score, for example, rarely needs more Reading practice — it needs targeted grammar drilling.
