HSK 3 is the third level of the Hanyu Shuiping Kaoshi, the standardized Chinese proficiency test for non native speakers, run by Chinese Testing International (CTI). It belongs to the elementary tier and shows you can handle daily, study and work situations in basic but effective Mandarin. It suits learners who have finished HSK 2, students chasing a Chinese language scholarship, and anyone who wants a recognized benchmark before moving on to HSK 4.
HSK is changing, and this affects how you prepare. CTI has announced that HSK 3.0, the revised system, launches worldwide on 13 December 2026. Regular sittings before that date, including those in October and November, use the older HSK 2.0 format. HSK 3.0 also changes the number of levels, from six to nine, with levels 1 to 6 as separate exams and levels 7 to 9 combined into one. Check which version your centre is running before you pick study materials.
HSK 3 does not test memorized facts. It tests whether you can use Chinese to get things done: following a phone call, reading a notice, writing a short message. For many learners it is the first level where Chinese works for ordinary life rather than only for introductions and shopping. It is also an accepted entry point for some short Chinese language programmes. For example, the Beijing Language and Culture University scholarship for Chinese language teachers lists HSK 3 results among its requirements for one semester and one year tracks free italian proficiency test pre intermedio A2 practice test
There is no formal prerequisite. You do not need to hold HSK 1 or HSK 2 first, and anyone can register for any level. In practice, a test centre may ask for the same passport or ID you plan to use in applications, so register under that name.

Under HSK 3.0, you must read about 655 characters and write about 250 by hand. The writing section is where many HSK 2 graduates feel the jump. You fill in missing characters, with pinyin shown only for the gap, and then write a sentence of your own using a given word. The speaking test has three task types: repeating what you hear (8 tasks), describing a picture (5) and answering questions (2). Paper and computer formats exist, though not every centre offers both.
CTI’s HSK 3.0 syllabus has five parts: communicative tasks, topics, vocabulary, grammar and characters. The listening and reading papers draw on everyday topics such as family, school, work, health, travel, shopping and public services. Grammar at this level includes comparisons, complements of result and direction, time expressions and common conjunctions. The official syllabus, sample papers and audio are free on and they should be your first stop.
For HSK 2.0, the pass mark at level 3 is 180 out of 300. CTI states that scores are valid for two years from the test date. This matters for applications, because the result must still be valid when you apply, not only when you enrol. Results usually arrive within roughly 2 to 4 weeks for computer tests and about a month for paper tests.
Registration is handled through where you choose a level, format, test centre and date. Fees and local steps vary by centre, and some centres register candidates directly through their own forms. For the 13 December 2026 HSK 3.0 sitting, CTI has published general deadlines of 16 November for paper tests and 3 December for computer tests (Beijing time). Individual centres often close earlier, so confirm your own centre’s deadline. During the HSK 3.0 pilot sittings, HSK 3 candidates were also asked to register for the matching speaking test, so check whether your session pairs the two.
HSK 3 is best understood as a gateway rather than a final credential. It is useful for short language study in China, for scholarship tracks that start at the lower levels, and as proof of progress for learners in service roles such as tourism, hospitality and customer support where basic Mandarin helps. Chinese universities usually ask for HSK 4 for a Chinese taught bachelor’s degree, so HSK 3 is commonly a stepping stone toward that target.
Timing and question style are the two things learners underestimate most. AllExamQuestions.com’s free HSK 3 practice tests are being added so you can rehearse listening, reading and writing under conditions, review explanations, and spot weak areas before sitting the exam. Pair them with the official syllabus and the CTI sample papers, and take word lists from the version of the syllabus that matches your test date.
