ENCOR sits in an odd spot: it's simultaneously the entry exam for CCNP Enterprise and one of the concentration options that feeds into CCIE Enterprise Infrastructure and CCIE Enterprise Wireless. That dual role is why the blueprint is so wide — you're tested on wired routing and switching, wireless architecture, security, automation, and virtualization in the same 120-minute sitting. Most candidates who've sat both ENCOR and its predecessor (the old CCNP R&S composite exams) say the automation and programmability section is the shift: this isn't a routing-and-switching exam with a few Python questions bolted on, it expects you to actually reason about APIs, JSON structures, and controller-based architectures like Cisco DNA Center and SD-WAN.

What ENCOR Exam Actually Tests

The current blueprint (v1.1) breaks down into six domains, and the weighting tells you where to spend your time:

  • Architecture (15%) — enterprise network design principles, Cisco SD-Access and SD-WAN fabric roles, on-prem vs. cloud infrastructure deployment models, and QoS fundamentals within architecture design

  • Virtualization (10%) — device virtualization (VRF-lite, virtual switching), data path virtualization (VXLAN, GRE, IPsec tunneling), and network functions virtualization concepts

  • Infrastructure (30%) — the largest domain by far, covering Layer 2/Layer 3 fundamentals, EIGRP and OSPF, wireless architecture and roaming, infrastructure security mechanisms, and multicast

  • Network Assurance (10%) — diagnostic tools like SNMP, NetFlow, IPFIX, and understanding how to use telemetry for troubleshooting

  • Security (20%) — device access control, AAA with TACACS+/RADIUS, security for wireless, and network security design including firewalls and Cisco security appliances

  • Automation (15%) — interpreting JSON-encoded data, constructing EEM applets, working with RESTCONF/NETCONF, and understanding how controllers like DNA Center abstract configuration

Infrastructure and Security together make up half your exam. If your prep time is skewed toward automation because it feels new and unfamiliar, you're probably under-preparing for the routing, switching, and wireless fundamentals that carry more weight.

Who Typically Takes ENCOR Exam

ENCOR draws a specific crowd: network engineers with roughly 3–5 years of hands-on experience who are moving from CCNA-level responsibilities into architecture and design roles, or professionals recertifying from the older CCNP R&S track who now need to fold in SD-Access and automation knowledge they may not use daily in their current job. It also pulls in engineers going straight for CCIE who choose ENCOR as their qualifying exam before the CCIE lab. Because of this mix, you'll see people who are extremely strong on OSPF and EIGRP troubleshooting but shaky on YANG models and controller APIs — and the reverse, engineers from newer DevOps-adjacent roles who understand automation concepts but haven't spent years in a CLI troubleshooting spanning-tree loops.

ENCOR Exam Format Details Relevant to Practicing

The official ENCOR exam runs 120 minutes and typically presents 90–110 questions, though Cisco doesn't publish an exact fixed count and it can vary slightly per session. Question types include multiple choice, drag-and-drop, and simulation-style items where you're asked to interpret a topology diagram or configuration snippet rather than just recall a definition. A meaningful chunk of the exam presents partial running-configs or show command output and asks you to identify what's misconfigured or what the output implies — this is where candidates who only memorized command syntax without ever reading  output tend to lose time. There's no dedicated lab/simulation section the way some older Cisco exams had, but the scenario-based questions serve a similar function by testing applied understanding rather than rote recall.

How to Use ENCOR Practice Test Effectively

Don't treat every wrong answer the same way. If you miss a question on OSPF LSA types, that's a knowledge gap you close with review. If you miss a question because you misread a topology diagram or config snippet under time pressure, that's a pacing and reading-comprehension issue, and more practice questions of the same type — not more theory — is the fix. Given how config-and-output-heavy this exam is, work through practice questions with an actual terminal open where possible, so you're translating between "reading output" and "typing commands" rather than only ever reading passively. Track your weak domain by percentage, not by gut feeling — if you're consistently missing Security domain questions, that's 20% of the exam, and it deserves proportionate review time rather than being treated as a minor gap.

Common Mistakes Candidates Make on ENCOR Exam

A recurring pattern: candidates over-invest in memorizing EIGRP and OSPF metric calculations to the point of being able to do them by hand, then get caught off guard by SD-Access fabric role questions (border node, control plane node, edge node) because that material feels newer and less "core" even though it's directly in the Architecture and Infrastructure domains. Another common miss is treating the automation domain as optional because a candidate's day job is pure CLI work — but 15% weighting on JSON parsing, RESTCONF vs. NETCONF distinctions, and EEM applet syntax is not something you can skip and still comfortably pass. Candidates also frequently underestimate the wireless material inside the Infrastructure domain, assuming ENCOR is routing-and-switching-only and discovering mid-exam that CAPWAP, roaming types, and wireless security are fair game.

Study Tips Specific to ENCOR Exam

Build a habit of reading raw show ip route, show ip ospf neighbor, and show spanning-tree output cold, without a lab guide telling you what to expect — this exam tests interpretation under time pressure more than command syntax recall. For the automation domain specifically, don't just read about REST APIs abstractly; look at an actual DNA Center API response body and practice picking values out of nested JSON, since that's closer to what the exam presents than a conceptual multiple-choice question would suggest. For SD-Access and SD-WAN architecture, draw the fabric roles out by hand repeatedly (control plane node, border node, edge node for SD-Access; vSmart, vBond, vManage, vEdge for SD-WAN) until you can label a blank topology diagram from memory, because architecture questions frequently present a diagram and ask you to identify or place a role.
