The Check Point Certified Security Expert (CCSE) R81 exam, code 156-315.81.20, is the advanced level credential for administrators who run Check Point Quantum Security Gateways and Security Management in larger networks. It sits above the Security Administrator (CCSA) level and tests deployment, policy design, VPN, threat prevention, clustering, performance tuning and troubleshooting. It suits firewall administrators, network security engineers and consultants who already manage Check Point environments and want proof of expert skills.

Exam overview and purpose

CCSA proves you can install, configure and maintain a Check Point firewall. CCSE goes further and checks whether you can design and troubleshoot complex deployments. Typical examples are clustered gateways that must fail over cleanly, VPN communities spanning many sites, and gateways that need tuning under heavy traffic.

The credential is also a stepping stone. CCSE is the base for the Security Master path, which adds specialty accreditations.

Version note: R81.20 and R82

Check Point has been moving candidates to R82 (156-315.82). One roadmap source reports that R81.20 exams retired on June 30, 2026, and another noted R81.20 stayed available at Pearson VUE only until June 2026. Before you study or book, check the Check Point listing on Pearson VUE to see which version you can actually sit. Most of the core skills carry over between versions, but R82 adds newer features.

Eligibility requirements

This exam has a  prerequisite. You must have passed a CCSA or CCSE exam on version R80 or later. The earlier certificate does not need to be current, so an expired R8x CCSA still qualifies. Check Point does not set a formal experience requirement, but regular hands on time with Gaia, SmartConsole and policy installation makes a clear difference.

Exam structure and format

The exam is delivered through Pearson VUE, either at a test center or, where offered, remotely. Questions are multiple choice and mostly scenario based. They describe a gateway, cluster or VPN problem and ask what you would configure, check or change. There are no live lab tasks. Check Point’s own prep guide lists 100 questions, and the pass mark most commonly quoted is 70 percent. Reported time limits differ between sources, as shown in the Quick Facts block, so confirm the limit when you book.

Check Point also publishes a short official practice exam on Pearson VUE. It draws from the  question pool, which makes it useful for getting used to the wording.

Syllabus and domain areas

Check Point does not publish a percentage weighting per domain in the sources I found, so treat any weighting table you see elsewhere as unofficial. The course topics behind the exam include:

  • Advanced deployments and management high availability

  • Security Gateway deployment and clustering with ClusterXL

  • Advanced policy configuration, layers, Access Control and Application Control

  • Identity Awareness and user access management

  • Threat Prevention, including IPS, Anti Bot, Anti Virus, Threat Emulation and Threat Extraction

  • Site to site and remote access VPN

  • Logging, SmartLog and SmartEvent monitoring

  • Performance tuning with SecureXL and CoreXL

  • Gaia maintenance, backup and restore, and troubleshooting

Registration process

Register through Pearson VUE using your Check Point exam account. Make sure the name and email on your account match your ID and your Check Point User Center details, because mismatches can delay results and certificate issue. Fees, language options, extra time rules for candidates testing in a second language and rescheduling terms are set at booking, so read the confirmation screens before paying.

Career value

CCSE is most recognized in organizations that use Check Point for perimeter and data center security, such as banks, telecoms, managed security providers and government networks. Employers tend to read it as evidence that you can run a clustered, policy heavy environment, not only create rules. It fits roles such as firewall engineer, network security engineer and security consultant, and it supports the next step toward the Security Master track.

Preparing with practice tests

The free practice tests on AllExamQuestions.com can help you find weak areas before booking, especially in clustering, VPN and threat prevention. Use them alongside Check Point’s official courseware, admin guides and a lab, not as a replacement for them.
