“"The practice exams helped me better understand enterprise agility concepts and improved my confidence before attempting the certification. The explanations made complex topics much easier to understand."”
Amelia Jones
Agile Program Manager
The SAFe Agilist (SA) certification is issued by Scaled Agile and earned through the exam that follows the Leading SAFe course. It is aimed at leaders, managers, product people, project and program managers, and agile coaches who work in organizations running the Scaled Agile Framework. The exam checks whether you can apply Lean-Agile thinking, Agile Release Trains, PI Planning, and Lean Portfolio Management in business situations.
SAFe exists to help large organizations coordinate many teams around shared business outcomes. The SA credential shows that a candidate understands the language and logic of that system well enough to lead or support it. It focuses on how leaders behave, how work flows from idea to customer, and how funding and strategy connect to delivery.
Scaled Agile has updated the exam to an AI-Empowered edition. Its current study guide adds topics on using AI in agile practice and in leadership. Earlier candidates may still see references to the SAFe 6.0 version, which had a different passing score, so confirm which edition your course uses.
There is no formal experience requirement. Training partners say anyone may attend the Leading SAFe course, though some recommend around two years of agile or scrum exposure in a delivery, product, or management role. Exam access normally comes through the SAFe Community Platform learning plan after you complete the course. Scaled Agile also lists the option of an exam purchase, so check the current route on the official site.
According to Scaled Agile’s study guide, the exam has these characteristics:
Questions: 45, structured as multiple choice with a single selected answer
Time limit: 90 minutes, with the timer shown once questions appear
Passing score: 80% for the AI-Empowered edition
Delivery: Web based, closed book, with no outside assistance
Scoring: Based on correct answers only, and unanswered questions count as incorrect
Submission: The exam is submitted automatically when the timer ends
Before you start, you must accept Scaled Agile’s Candidate Agreement. The official practice test mirrors the exam’s question count, difficulty, timebox, and domains, and offers unlimited attempts. Passing it does not guarantee a pass on the exam. Scaled Agile notes that details are subject to change at any time.
The AI-Empowered edition groups content into six domains, each tied to a lesson in the course.
Adapt and Thrive with SAFe (7 to 9%): Why organizations face disruption and what makes a Lean-Agile organization.
Build a Foundation with Mindset, Value, and Principles (21 to 23%): The Lean-Agile mindset, SAFe Core Values, the Lean-Agile principles, and using AI to support agility.
Establish Team and Technical Agility (10 to 12%): Cross functional agile teams, organizing around value with Agile Release Trains, built in quality, and the continuous delivery pipeline with DevOps.
Product Development Flow (25 to 28%): Customer centricity and design thinking, prioritizing the ART backlog, taking part in PI Planning, and executing the Program Increment. This is the heaviest domain.
Explore Lean Portfolio Management (21 to 23%): Defining a SAFe portfolio, connecting it to enterprise strategy, establishing portfolio vision and flow, and using Lean budgets and guardrails.
Lead the Change (7 to 9%): Leading by example, leading organizational change, and empowering leaders with AI.
Roughly half the exam sits in Product Development Flow and Lean Portfolio Management, so these deserve the most study time.
The exam is bundled with training rather than sold as a standalone line item in most cases. Course prices differ between Scaled Agile partners, so the total cost varies by provider and region. Scaled Agile states that the first two attempts are included when taken within 60 days of course completion or exam purchase. Retakes cost $50 for the unproctored exam and $495 for the proctored exam.
The retake schedule works like this: the third attempt is available immediately after a second failure, the fourth requires a 10 day wait, the fifth requires 30 days, and each later attempt needs another 30 day gap.
Certification lasts one year and is renewed annually. Training partners report a $100 renewal fee, which you should confirm in your Scaled Agile account before renewing.
Scaled Agile certifies candidates through its partner network and Learning Plan. In general, you register for a Leading SAFe course with an authorized partner, complete the class, and then access the exam through the SAFe Community Platform. Fees, class dates, and exam windows depend on the partner and current policy, so follow the steps shown on Scaled Agile’s official site and in your learning plan.
SA is most useful where SAFe is already in use or being adopted, which tends to mean large software, finance, telecom, public sector, and enterprise IT environments. It gives managers and leaders a common vocabulary with Release Train Engineers, product managers, architects, and portfolio teams. It is also the usual entry point into the wider SAFe certification path, which includes roles such as SAFe Scrum Master, Product Owner/Product Manager, and Practice Consultant.
Scenario questions on this exam reward understanding over memorization, so working through practice questions is a sensible way to find weak domains. The free SAFe Agilist practice sets on AllExamQuestions.com let you rehearse timed, scenario style questions and review explanations. Treat them as a supplement to the Leading SAFe course and Scaled Agile’s official practice test, not a replacement. Note that the practice format here is not identical to the exam.
