“"The practice exams closely reflected the DELE B2 format and greatly improved my confidence before taking the official exam."”

The DELE B2 isn’t a single test — it’s four separate pruebas (papers) that get administered across one or two sessions depending on your exam center. Reading, listening, and writing happen on the same day; the oral exam is sometimes scheduled separately, with 20 minutes of silent preparation immediately before you walk in to speak. Nothing about the format rewards guessing: reading and listening are three-option multiple choice plus matching tasks, but writing and speaking are fully open-ended and graded by human examiners against published rating scales.
The pacing is tighter than most candidates expect going in. You get 70 minutes to work through 36 reading items across four tasks, and 40 minutes for 30 listening items across five tasks — the audio plays once, sometimes twice depending on the task, and then it’s gone. There’s no replay button on exam day the way there is in casual listening practice.
Paper | Duration | Tasks | Weight |
|---|---|---|---|
Comprensión de lectura (Reading) | 70 min | 4 tasks, 36 items | 25% |
Comprensión auditiva (Listening) | 40 min | 5 tasks, 30 items | 25% |
Expresión e interacción escritas (Writing) | 80 min | 2 tasks | 25% |
Expresión e interacción orales (Speaking) | 20 min (+20 min prep) | 3 tasks | 25% |
Each paper is worth a maximum of 25 points, for 100 points total — but as the next section explains, the overall 100-point score isn’t actually what determines whether you pass.
Instituto Cervantes doesn’t grade the DELE B2 on a single overall average. Your four papers are grouped into two blocks, and you need at least 60% in each block separately:
Grupo 1: Reading + Speaking (50 points combined)
Grupo 2: Listening + Writing (50 points combined)
This means a candidate who aces reading and listening but underperforms on writing can still fail the whole exam, because a weak writing score drags Grupo 2 below the 60% threshold even if reading comprehension was close to perfect. Candidates who treat the four skills as interchangeable — cramming grammar and vocabulary while skipping writing and speaking practice because “those are subjective anyway” — are the ones who get blindsided by this structure. Preparing for the DELE B2 means preparing for two balanced pairs, not one combined score.
A second underrated difficulty: the writing paper’s second task regularly asks candidates to interpret a graph or survey data and build an opinion piece around it — a skill that has almost nothing to do with vocabulary memorization and everything to do with practicing how to describe trends and percentages in Spanish before test day.
Generic vocabulary drilling does less for DELE B2 readiness than timed, task-specific practice. A few things worth doing deliberately:
Time your reading and listening sections to the official limits (70 and 40 minutes) rather than working through questions at your own pace — pacing under pressure is a skill in itself.
Treat listening tasks as single-pass exercises during practice, since the audio plays a limited number of times per task.
Don’t skip writing and speaking just because they can’t be auto-graded on a multiple-choice platform. Draft both writing tasks under the 150–180 word limit and have a tutor, exchange partner, or fluent speaker review them against formal and informal register.
Rehearse the oral exam’s three-task sequence specifically: a monologue with follow-up discussion on a set of proposals, a monologue built from an image with interaction, and an unscripted informal conversation with the examiner. The 20-minute silent prep time is also worth practicing — it’s a skill to plan a coherent monologue in 20 minutes under exam conditions.
Assuming a strong reading score will offset a weak writing score, without they’re graded in separate blocks.
Practicing listening comprehension almost exclusively with slow, enunciated learner audio instead of natural-paced native speech, interviews, and radio-style recordings.
Under-preparing the subjunctive, which appears constantly in both the reading gap-fill tasks and in writing tasks that call for opinions, hypotheticals, or indirect requests.
Memorizing vocabulary lists in isolation instead of practicing discourse connectors (sin embargo, por lo tanto, no obstante) that reading Tasks 2 and 3 specifically test through sentence-matching exercises.
Walking into the oral exam without having spoken Spanish spontaneously under time pressure beforehand — reading fluently and speaking fluently are not the same skill.
Starting from a solid B1: Budget roughly three to four months of regular study, with the final two to three weeks dedicated to full-length timed mock exams across all four papers rather than isolated skill drills.
Already comfortable at a strong B1/weak B2 (regular reading, some conversation exposure): Six to eight weeks of focused practice, concentrated on writing feedback and spoken fluency, tends to close the remaining gap.
Retaking after a failed attempt: Since the DELE B2 is graded by block rather than by individual skill, identify which of the two groups fell short and concentrate preparation there — four to six weeks of targeted work on that pair of skills, rather than restarting general study from scratch.
The core four-paper structure of the DELE B2 has been stable for years, so there’s no need to worry about a format overhaul between sessions. What does change periodically are the specific audio and interaction materials used in the oral and listening papers — Instituto Cervantes renewed the speaking and interaction test materials for DELE B1, B2, and several other levels in 2024 as part of routine content refreshes. This doesn’t affect task types or scoring, but it’s a reminder to practice with recently updated materials rather than exam guides from several years ago, since the surface content (topics, speaker accents, survey data used in writing prompts) does get refreshed even when the skeleton stays the same.
