AZ-900 gets a reputation as the entry-level throwaway certification, and in one sense that's fair: it has no prerequisites, and Microsoft designed it for people who've never touched the Azure portal. But the exam trips up a surprising number of test-takers for a specific reason: it tests breadth over depth, across three domains that don't overlap the way people expect. Someone who's spent a year deploying virtual machines can still fail the governance section because they never had to think about Azure Policy versus RBAC versus Blueprints in isolation. That's the challenge here, not difficulty of individual questions but the sheer spread of terminology you're expected to recognize instantly.
Microsoft organizes the current exam around three skill areas, and each one has its own personality:
Describe cloud concepts. This is where you're tested on the difference between IaaS, PaaS, and SaaS, and — more importantly — on scenario questions that ask you to identify which one a described situation fits. You'll also see questions on CapEx versus OpEx, economies of scale, and the shared responsibility model, which is one of the most commonly missed topics because candidates memorize the definition but can't apply it to a specific service.
Describe Azure architecture and services. This is the largest domain and the one that punishes shallow studying. It covers compute options (VMs, containers, Azure Functions, App Service), networking basics (VNets, VPN Gateway, ExpressRoute, load balancers), storage tiers and redundancy options (LRS, ZRS, GRS), identity services (Azure AD, MFA, Conditional Access), and general-purpose Azure tools. The volume of named services here is what catches people off guard — you don't need deep configuration knowledge, but you do need to recognize what each service is for.
Describe Azure management and governance. This section is smaller but conceptually dense: cost management tools (the Pricing Calculator versus the Total Cost of Ownership Calculator versus Cost Management + Billing), governance tools (Azure Policy, Blueprints, resource locks, tags), and monitoring tools (Azure Monitor, Service Health, Azure Advisor). Candidates who skip this section because it "feels administrative" tend to lose the most points here.
AZ-900's audience is wider than most Microsoft certifications. IT professionals use it as a stepping stone before AZ-104 (Administrator) or AZ-204 (Developer). But a large share of candidates are non-technical: sales teams at Microsoft partners who need to speak credibly about Azure, project managers moving into cloud-adjacent roles, students building a resume before an internship, and career switchers testing whether cloud computing is a direction worth pursuing further. If you fall into that second group, expect the vocabulary-heavy questions to take longer than the scenario-based ones, since you're building unfamiliar terminology from scratch rather than mapping it onto hands-on experience.
The official AZ-900 exam runs 85 minutes and typically includes 40–60 questions, a mix of multiple-choice, multiple-answer (select all that apply, often without telling you how many are correct), drag-and-drop matching, and occasional case-study-style scenarios. The passing score is 700 out of a possible 1000, scaled rather than a raw percentage, so you can't calculate "how many I need to get right" cleanly — treat 700 as roughly 70–75% mastery across the three domains rather than a literal fraction.
Two format quirks catch people during practice: multi-select questions that don't state how many answers are correct force you to evaluate each option independently rather than process of elimination, and several questions describe a business scenario first and only ask the actual question in the final sentence — skimming the setup costs points here more than on almost any other Microsoft exam.
The single most common error is confusing availability zones, regions, and region pairs — they sound related but serve different resiliency purposes, and Microsoft loves testing the distinction. Second most common: mixing up Azure AD (identity) with RBAC (access control) — candidates often answer identity questions with access-control terminology because both involve "who can do what."
On the governance side, people regularly confuse the Pricing Calculator (estimating cost of a new deployment) with the TCO Calculator (comparing on-premises cost to Azure cost) — these get tested as separate answer options in the same question, so mixing them up is an automatic wrong answer, not a partial credit situation.
Finally, candidates frequently misjudge SLA composite calculations — when two services are chained together, the combined SLA is lower than either individual SLA, and several practice-test takers get this backwards on their first pass.
Because AZ-900 tests recognition more than application, don't just review questions you got wrong — review the distractor answers too, since Microsoft frequently reuses similar-sounding service names as wrong options (Azure Policy vs. Azure Blueprints vs. Azure Resource Manager templates, for example). Run through the governance and cost-management questions in a separate pass from the architecture questions; because that domain has fewer questions overall, weak spots there are easy to overlook if you're only tracking your total score.
If you're coming from a non-technical background, spend extra practice time on the compute and networking vocabulary specifically — those sections assume you can tell VMs, containers, and serverless functions apart at a glance, and no amount of business-context knowledge substitutes for that recognition speed under timed conditions.
Build a two-column comparison sheet for the terms Microsoft loves pairing on this exam: IaaS/PaaS/SaaS, LRS/ZRS/GRS/GZRS, Availability Zones/Regions/Region Pairs, and Azure AD/RBAC. AZ-900 questions are frequently structured as "which of these is NOT" or "which one specifically handles X," so having these terms mapped side by side does more for your score than reading Microsoft Learn modules linearly front to back.
Also worth doing: skim the Azure pricing page and the Service Health / Azure Advisor documentation once, even briefly. These are exactly the kind of low-glamour, easy-to-skip topics that show up disproportionately in the management and governance section relative to how much attention they get in most study guides.
