Most candidates who reach CBT-2 already cleared a screening round where the syllabus was general and forgiving. CBT-2 is where that changes. You are now answering 175 questions in two very different papers stitched into one sitting: a general Part A that behaves like a harder version of CBT-1, and a trade paper in Part B that assumes you actually completed an ITI or diploma in your chosen engineering stream. A candidate can top Part A and still go home if Part B falls below the qualifying line. That single fact shapes everything about how this stage should be practiced.
Part A carries 100 questions from Mathematics, General Intelligence & Reasoning, and Basic Science & Engineering. This is not a repeat of CBT-1's General Science section. Basic Science & Engineering pulls in Engineering Drawing (projections, views, symbolic representation, geometric figures), units and measurement, mass, weight and density, work, power and energy, heat and temperature, basic electricity, levers and simple machines, occupational safety and health, environment education, and IT literacy. For candidates from a non-technical schooling background, this section is where CBT-2 stops feeling like CBT-1 with harder numbers and starts feeling like an actual engineering aptitude paper.
Part B has 75 questions and is entirely trade-specific, drawn from the Directorate General of Training syllabus for the trade a candidate selected at the time of application, such as Fitter, Electrician, Electronics Mechanic, Mechanic (Motor Vehicle), or Wireman, among others. Two candidates sitting the same CBT-2 slot can get completely different Part B papers depending on their declared trade.
Almost everyone here has already cleared CBT-1, so the general aptitude level in the room is higher than it was at Stage 1. The candidate pool splits along trade lines: ITI diploma holders whose Part B content maps directly onto what they studied in their trade coursework, and engineering diploma or degree holders who often have stronger Part A fundamentals but sometimes weaker recall of ITI-specific practical terminology in Part B. Both groups tend to underprepare for Basic Science & Engineering in Part A because it sits between "general" and "technical" and doesn't feel fully owned by either study routine.
CBT-2 runs across roughly 150 minutes split into a 90-minute Part A and a 60-minute Part B, with 1/3 mark deducted for every wrong answer in both parts, the same penalty structure as CBT-1. Part A marks decide your merit ranking. Part B is qualifying only, with a minimum cutoff of 35% for every category, but scoring zero weightage toward final merit doesn't mean it's low stakes. Fail to clear it and your strong Part A score becomes irrelevant.
A pattern candidates commonly misjudge going in: Engineering Drawing questions in Part A are answered from static diagrams, and because they're visual rather than computational, people tend to either rush them or freeze on them. Neither works well under negative marking. Read the projection or view carefully once, then commit.
Under CEN 01/2026, the final merit list weightage shifted to 50% from CBT-2 Part A and 50% from CBAT, up from the previous 70/30 split. That change alone raises the practical importance of the psychometric CBAT stage that follows CBT-2, and it means treating CBT-2 as the only stage that matters is now a mistake candidates weren't making two cycles ago.
Attempt Part A and Part B as separate timed blocks that mirror the real 90 and 60 minute splits, not as one combined session. The switch between general aptitude questions and trade-specific recall genuinely changes how your brain is working, and practicing that transition matters as much as knowing the content.
For Part A, weight your practice time toward Basic Science & Engineering even if it feels like the smaller, less familiar topic compared to Mathematics and Reasoning. Most candidates arrive with years of Maths and Reasoning practice from earlier competitive exams but almost no prior exposure to Engineering Drawing conventions, which means marginal practice hours return more accuracy gain there than in sections you've already drilled repeatedly elsewhere.
For Part B, only practice questions from your actual declared trade. Generic "engineering awareness" question banks that mix trades together will waste your limited prep time and won't reflect what you're actually facing on exam day.
Treating Part B as a formality because it's qualifying rather than merit-counting is the most costly one. Candidates spend the bulk of their remaining prep time polishing Part A scores that are already comfortable, then walk into Part B underprepared and miss the 35% cutoff on a section they could have cleared easily with basic trade revision.
The second common mistake is applying CBT-1 level General Science preparation to Part A's Basic Science & Engineering section, assuming overlap that doesn't fully exist. Physics and chemistry facts from CBT-1 help with the heat, temperature, and basic electricity portions, but Engineering Drawing and levers and simple machines require dedicated, separate preparation that a General Science revision alone won't cover.
A third mistake shows up in time allocation during the actual exam. Part A's 90 minutes for 100 questions gives less breathing room than it looks like once you account for Engineering Drawing questions, which take longer to parse visually than a straightforward arithmetic or reasoning question. Candidates who don't budget extra seconds per drawing question end up rushing the last 15 to 20 questions of Part A.
Build your Engineering Drawing practice around the actual instrument and symbol conventions used in the official DGT trade syllabus rather than general technical drawing tutorials, since RRB questions test recognition of specific symbolic representations rather than freehand drawing skill.
For Part B, past ITI practical exam question patterns from your own trade tend to map more closely onto RRB's Part B style than generic railway mock test banks, because both draw from the same DGT curriculum base. If you kept your ITI coursework notes, they're a more targeted resource here than most third-party RRB books.
Run your CBT-2 mocks back to back with a CBT-1 style paper occasionally, even after you've cleared CBT-1, purely to keep your Mathematics and Reasoning speed sharp. It's common for candidates to spend so much of their post-CBT-1 prep time on Basic Science & Engineering and trade content that their arithmetic speed, which was strong going into CBT-1, quietly slips by the time CBT-2 arrives.
Start with a full-length Part A mock under strict 90-minute conditions, then follow it immediately with a trade-specific Part B set. Review both separately: for Part A, sort your wrong answers by subject so you can see whether Basic Science & Engineering or Reasoning is actually your weak point rather than assuming. For Part B, treat every missed question as a gap in your ITI syllabus revision, not just a random miss, and go back to that specific topic before your next mock.
