RRB JE CBT-2 is the exam that actually decides your Railway JE rank, not CBT-1. The Railway Recruitment Boards use CBT-1 purely as a screening filter, its marks are dropped once you clear the cutoff, and everyone who moves forward starts CBT-2 on equal footing. That single fact changes how you should be preparing right now: 100 of the 150 marks in CBT-2 come from a Technical Abilities section tied to your specific engineering branch, so a candidate who coasted through CBT-1 on general reasoning and basic maths can't coast through this one on the same strategy.
The paper carries 150 questions for 150 marks, split into five sections that appear separately rather than mixed together: General Awareness, Physics & Chemistry, Basics of Computers and Applications, Basics of Environment and Pollution Control, and Technical Abilities. The first four sections are common to every branch and share the remaining 50 marks between them. Technical Abilities is where the exam becomes branch-specific: a Mechanical candidate answers questions on thermodynamics, strength of materials, manufacturing processes, and IC engines, while an Electrical candidate faces electrical machines, power systems, and control systems, and a Civil candidate gets surveying, RCC design, geotechnical engineering, and construction materials. There's no shared technical pool. Whatever branch you applied under is the syllabus you need to know cold.
RRB JE draws diploma and degree holders in Mechanical, Electrical, Civil, and Electronics & Telecommunication engineering, most of them fresh graduates chasing a stable Group C technical post in Indian Railways rather than a private-sector job. A meaningful share are repeat candidates: because CBT-1 doesn't carry forward, someone can clear CBT-1 comfortably one cycle and still miss the final cutoff on CBT-2 if their branch knowledge is rusty, which is why so many aspirants sitting for CBT-2 have already been through this exact process before and are specifically trying to fix a technical-section weakness this time around.
The test runs 120 minutes, is conducted online in MCQ format, and carries 1/3 negative marking per wrong answer, so guessing across five distinct sections is a different risk calculation than guessing on a single mixed paper. Because sections are presented one after another rather than interleaved, you can't drift from a tough Physics & Chemistry question into an easier Technical Abilities one to buy time. Candidates who've sat recent shifts consistently report the Technical Abilities section running theory-heavy, with roughly 80-90% conceptual or definition-based questions and only a smaller share of numerical problems, so pure formula-memorization without understanding the underlying principle tends to backfire here more than it would in a purely numerical paper.
Don't split your practice time evenly across five sections just because five sections exist. Technical Abilities is worth two-thirds of the total marks, so a study block that gives it 30% of your attention because "it's just one section" is misallocated. Work through branch-specific mock sets separately from the general sections, and time yourself section-by-section rather than only checking your overall score, since a candidate who's strong in Physics & Chemistry can still miss the cutoff if Technical Abilities drags. When you review wrong answers, sort them by section: General Awareness misses are usually a current-affairs gap you can close with railway-focused news, while Technical Abilities misses usually point to a specific weak topic in your branch syllabus that needs re-study, not just re-practice.
The most frequent mistake is treating Computer Applications and Environment & Pollution Control as filler sections not worth serious prep, then losing 8-10 easy marks to basic terminology they never revised. The second is over-preparing General Science from the CBT-1 syllabus and assuming it transfers directly, when CBT-2's Physics & Chemistry questions run at a noticeably higher, often diploma-level depth. The third is attempting every Technical Abilities question even when genuinely unsure, which is costly given the 1/3 negative marking on a section worth 100 marks. Candidates also frequently underestimate how theory-heavy the technical section is and over-invest in numerical problem-solving at the expense of definitions, standard values, and working principles that show up far more often.
Build a branch-specific formula and standard-values sheet and revise it in the final week, since Technical Abilities rewards recall speed on things like standard electrical machine ratings or material property values as much as it rewards problem-solving. Pull previous-year RRB JE CBT-2 papers for your specific branch rather than generic engineering question banks, because the phrasing and topic emphasis in RRB JE technical papers tends to differ from GATE-style or private-exam question banks even when the underlying syllabus overlaps. For the General Awareness section, prioritize railway-related current affairs and government scheme updates over broad national and international news, since that's where this section's questions tend to concentrate compared to other government exams. Finally, do at least a few full 120-minute mock attempts under section-locked conditions, since the inability to jump back to an earlier section once you've moved on is a format detail that trips up first-time CBT-2 candidates more than the difficulty of any individual question.
Start with a full-length branch-specific mock to see where your Technical Abilities score actually stands today, then use the section-wise breakdown to decide whether your remaining prep time goes toward technical topic revision or toward shoring up the four general sections. Given how much of the final mark sits in one section, that diagnostic is worth doing before you commit to a study plan.
