If the CIPT study material you've found lists seven domains — CIPT  Foundational Principles, Privacy Risks/Threats/Violations, Privacy Engineering, and so on as separate sections — you're looking at the pre-September-2025 structure. IAPP treats CIPT as one of its "core certifications" and updates its Body of Knowledge annually; the version effective September 1, 2025 consolidated the exam from seven domains down to five, folding several older domains together and adding a new one specifically covering data collection, use, dissemination, and destruction. Most of the actual tested content carried forward rather than disappearing — IAPP describes the change as largely reorganization rather than new subject matter — but the domain names and structure you'll see in current official material look different from anything written before that date.

What CIPT Exam Actually Certifies

CIPT validates the ability to embed privacy protections directly into technology — systems, products, and business processes — rather than testing legal or regulatory knowledge in isolation. It's IAPP's technical-track credential, distinct from CIPM (privacy program management) and the CIPP regional law certifications (CIPP/US, CIPP/E, etc.). It's accredited by the ANSI National Accreditation Board (ANAB) under ISO 17024:2012, which is a formal accreditation standard for personnel certification bodies.

Who CIPT Exam Is For (and Who It's Not)

This exam targets people who build or architect systems and now need to prove they can build privacy into them: software engineers, cloud architects, security engineers, DevSecOps practitioners, and privacy engineers. IAPP sets no formal prerequisite, but the practical audience is technologists first and lawyers or compliance specialists second — if your background is regulatory or legal rather than technical, CIPM or a regional CIPP credential is likely a better fit than CIPT.

Exam Format and Structure

You get 150 minutes, structured as 2.5 hours including a built-in 15-minute break, to answer 90 multiple-choice questions. Only 75 of those 90 are scored — the other 15 are unscored trial questions IAPP mixes in to evaluate for future exam versions, and since they're indistinguishable from scored questions, every item deserves full attention.

Scoring is reported on a scaled range from 100 to 500, with 300 needed to pass — a format shared across IAPP's certification exams. Cost Breakdown

The exam costs $550 USD. That figure covers the exam itself; IAPP separately charges a Certification Maintenance Fee to activate your credential once you pass, and again at each two-year renewal — so the all-in cost of staying certified is higher than the initial exam fee alone. Training courses, the official study guide, and practice question sets are additional optional costs on top of that.

Prerequisites and Eligibility

There's no prerequisite — you don't need another IAPP certification or any specific credential to register for CIPT. IAPP's general guidance recommends at least 30 hours of study time regardless of background, including for candidates who already hold other technical or privacy certifications, since the exam's blueprint and terminology are specific to IAPP's framework rather than generic industry knowledge.

How CIPT Exam Is Scored

Renewal and Certification Maintenance

CIPT certification runs in two-year terms. To keep it active, you need to earn continuing privacy education (CPE) credits and pay a Certification Maintenance Fee — required both to activate the certification initially after passing and again at each renewal point. Letting the maintenance lapse means losing active certification status, even though you'd still have passed the exam historically.

IAPP's general recommendation is a minimum of 30 hours of study, though that's a floor rather than a typical timeline — most candidates report spreading preparation across 8–10 weeks when studying part-time, working through the official Body of Knowledge domain by domain before moving into practice questions and scenario analysis. Because the exam blends conceptual understanding (privacy frameworks, risk models) with applied technical knowledge (encryption, access controls, data lifecycle handling), candidates without hands-on engineering or architecture background often need more time on the technical-controls material, while those without privacy-specific exposure need more time on frameworks and terminology.
