The HPE0-S59 exam, titled HPE Compute Solutions, is the proctored test behind the HPE ASE Compute Solutions credential from Hewlett Packard Enterprise. It targets infrastructure professionals such as presales engineers, solution architects and systems engineers who plan, size, configure and support HPE servers and compute platforms for customers. The current version adds AI workloads, including HPE Private Cloud AI, to the traditional server portfolio and management topics. This page summarizes the official details so you can plan your preparation with accurate information.
What the Exam Validates
HPE positions this exam at the Accredited Solutions Expert (ASE) level. According to the official preparation guide, it validates ASE level technical skills for HPE compute solutions, meaning you can interpret customer requirements and turn them into a sound design. The exam is less about memorizing product names and more about applying them. You may be asked to choose a platform for a workload, decide how to size an AI environment, or work out why a deployed system is behaving badly.
The exam has also changed over time. HPE updated it with changes that went live on May 1, 2025. Older material and many third party sites still describe the earlier 60 question format and a syllabus built around HPE Synergy, HPE OneView and HPE SimpliVity. Always compare any study resource against the current official guide.
Who Should Take It and Eligibility
HPE describes an ideal candidate rather than listing hard prerequisites. The guide refers to a candidate with a related HPE certification and at least 24 months of industry experience with compute solutions. Earlier versions of the guide named the HPE ATP Hybrid IT Solutions certification as the expected foundation. Treat these as strong recommendations. The exact wording and any formal requirements can change, so confirm them on the official exam page before you commit to a study plan.
You do need an HPE Learner ID and a Pearson VUE login to register. HPE also notes that completing a course or reading a study guide does not by itself guarantee a pass, because questions draw on job experience and industry knowledge.
Exam Structure and Format
The exam is proctored and consists of 50 questions to be completed in 90 minutes. The passing score is published as 61%. Questions are described by HPE as scenario based, and published exam summaries also mention matching items. The guide notes that candidates can leave comments on exam items during the session, and that the exam may include beta items used for experimental purposes. No reference material is allowed at the testing site.
Delivery languages have varied between versions of the guide, with English always listed and Japanese and Korean appearing in some. Check the current guide for the languages offered when you book.
Syllabus and Domain Breakdown
The current objectives cover the full life of a compute solution, from the first customer conversation through to operations. The main areas are:
AI fundamentals and positioning. Understanding core AI concepts, assessing a customer’s AI maturity, workloads and use cases, and positioning HPE AI solutions accordingly. One published breakdown assigns this area 25%, but verify the full weighting in the official guide.
Sizing and quoting HPE Private Cloud AI. Sizing HPE Private Cloud AI with NVIDIA solutions from customer information, then configuring and quoting them with the appropriate HPE tools.
Management solutions. Identifying which HPE management tool fits a given task, onboarding servers into HPE Compute Ops Management, and using it to handle common customer requests.
Storage design. Designing storage for HPE compute solutions based on a given scenario.
Performance optimization. Tuning HPE compute and AI solutions to meet stated requirements.
Troubleshooting. Diagnosing problems in HPE compute and AI environments from scenario details.
If you studied from older material, note that topics like HPE Synergy design, HPE OneView Global Dashboard and HPE Superdome Flex belonged to the earlier syllabus. Do not assume they carry the same weight today.
Registration Process
Registration runs through HPE’s certification platform and Pearson VUE. In general, you create or sign in with your HPE Learner ID, use that to access Pearson VUE, select HPE0-S59, and choose a delivery method and appointment time. The available options, such as test center or online proctoring, and the exact steps can change, so follow the instructions linked from the official exam page rather than relying on a third party walkthrough.
Exam Fee, Retakes and Validity
HPE has published regional pricing in the past, and some third party sources quote figures that differ for developed and emerging markets. Because fees change and vary by country, I have not listed a number here. The same applies to retake rules and how long the certification stays valid. Check the HPE certification policies and your Pearson VUE checkout screen for current figures.
Career Value
The ASE Compute Solutions credential is aimed at roles where someone has to recommend and stand behind an HPE infrastructure design. That includes presales and solution architect positions at HPE partners, systems engineers supporting customer data centers, and consultants working on server refreshes. The shift toward AI content reflects where HPE is steering customers, so the certification now also signals that you can talk credibly about AI infrastructure sizing and not only conventional servers. It is also a requirement within HPE’s own certification path, so it may matter if you are working toward further credentials or partner level recognition.
Preparing with Practice Tests
HPE’s own study guide, the second edition ASE Compute Solutions Official Certification Study Guide, is the primary resource. Practice questions are useful alongside it for finding weak areas. offers free HPE Compute Solutions practice tests you can use to rehearse scenario style questions and get used to answering them within the 90 minute limit. Use them as a check on your understanding, and keep the official guide as your source of truth for objectives.
