What to Expect on the Data-Con-101 Day of the Exam

Data-Con-101 is 60 scored multiple-choice/multiple-select questions plus up to 5 unscored items Salesforce is quietly testing for future versions of the exam, all in 105 minutes. You need 70% to pass, which means getting roughly 42 of the 60 scored questions right — the unscored ones don’t count against you, but you won’t know which five they are, so there’s no benefit to trying to spot them.

The question style leans heavily scenario-based rather than pure recall. Expect prompts like “A consulting team needs to reconcile loyalty records from two POS systems without creating duplicate profiles — which approach should they use?” rather than “What does DMO stand for?” You’re expected to pick the best answer among several technically-plausible ones, which is where most candidates lose points even when they know the underlying concepts.

There’s no prerequisite certification required to sit this exam, though Salesforce recommends candidates already hold the Administrator credential and have hands-on experience implementing Data 360 (formerly branded Data Cloud) in a customer-facing capacity. The $200 registration fee includes one sitting; a failed attempt costs $100 to retake.

What stands out compared to most Salesforce consultant exams is how flat this weighting is. There’s no single dominant domain you can over-invest in at the expense of others — even the lightest domain, Setup and Administration at 13%, still represents nearly a fifth of a passing score on its own.

The Topics Candidates Consistently Underestimate

Zero-Copy and data sharing mechanics. Candidates who’ve only worked with traditional Data Cloud ingestion tend to gloss over Zero-Copy federation — understanding when Data 360 queries data in place versus when it physically ingests and stores a copy changes the correct answer to several ingestion and governance scenario questions.

Identity resolution rule precedence. It’s not enough to know that match rules and reconciliation rules exist. The exam probes order of operations — which reconciliation rule wins when two match rules both fire on the same pair of records, and how survivorship rules behave when source priority ties. This is a frequent source of wrong answers even among people with  org experience, because it’s the kind of detail you only internalize by actually configuring it, not by reading about it.

The line between Data 360 and Agentforce/Einstein features. Section 1 (Solution Positioning) tests whether you can correctly describe Data 360’s role as the data foundation for generative and predictive AI features elsewhere in the platform — without overstating what Data 360 itself does versus what’s actually an Agentforce or Prompt Builder capability layered on top.

Activation targets and the systems that support them. Candidates memorize that you can activate segments to ad platforms and marketing tools, but the exam tests specifics — which activation targets support which data types, and what happens to an activation when the underlying segment refreshes mid-cycle.

How to Use Practice Tests Effectively for Data-Con-101  Exam

Because nearly every question on Data-Con-101 is scenario-based, drilling flashcard-style definitions won’t get you far. The more useful approach is to work through practice questions in domain-sized batches — do all the Harmonization and Unification questions in one sitting, for instance — and for every question you get wrong, don’t just note the correct letter. Write down why the distractor you picked was wrong. In a scenario exam, wrong answers are usually wrong for a specific technical reason (wrong tool for the use case, wrong order of operations, a rule that doesn’t apply at that stage), and spotting that pattern is what actually transfers to the exam.

Time yourself once you’re getting consistent scores above 75%. At 105 minutes for 65 questions, you have about 97 seconds per question — tight enough that second-guessing costs you time. Practicing under a clock surfaces whether you’re actually fluent in a domain or just slow-but-accurate, which won’t hold up on exam day.

Common Mistakes That Cause Retakes

  • Treating this as a pure Data Cloud product-knowledge test. The exam expects consulting judgment — picking the most appropriate solution for a stated business constraint, not just the technically-correct one.

  • Skipping Setup and Administration because it feels “less interesting” than ingestion or activation. At 13%, it’s the lowest-weighted domain, but it’s still worth more than most people budget time for, and permission/governance questions are often answered incorrectly out of unfamiliarity rather than difficulty.

  • Relying only on Trailhead modules without hands-on configuration. Trailhead badges are a reasonable starting point, but several domains (identity resolution rule order, activation refresh behavior) are genuinely hard to answer correctly without having configured them at least once in a Data 360-enabled org.

  • Not budgeting time for the AI/governance objectives in Solution Positioning. These questions read as “soft” compared to technical ingestion questions, but they’re graded just as strictly and candidates tend to under-prepare for them.

Data-Con-101  Study Timeline by Starting Experience

If you’re new to Data 360 and the broader Salesforce ecosystem: Plan on 6–8 weeks. Spend the first two to three weeks building foundational familiarity (Trailhead modules, a trial org to click through setup and basic ingestion), then shift into scenario practice for the remaining weeks, revisiting whichever domain is scoring weakest.

If you have Salesforce Administrator or related CRM experience but are new to Data 360 specifically: 3–4 weeks is usually . Your governance and permissions intuition from the core platform transfers, but you’ll still need dedicated time in the ingestion, harmonization, and activation domains, which have no close analog elsewhere in Salesforce.

If you’re retaking after a failed attempt: Pull your score report by section — Salesforce tells you which domains you underperformed in, even though it won’t give you a precise percentage. Spend the bulk of your remaining prep time on your two weakest domains rather than reviewing everything evenly; most retake failures come from the same one or two domains missed the first time, not a uniformly weak foundation.

What Changes Most Often on Dat a-Con-101 Exam

This certification was renamed from “Salesforce Certified Data Cloud Consultant” to “Salesforce Certified Data 360 Consultant” as part of Salesforce’s broader rebrand of the Data Cloud product line to Data 360. The underlying exam code and domain structure carried over, but terminology in both the product and the exam objectives shifted — if you’re using older prep material still labeled “Data Cloud Consultant,” check that it reflects current Data 360 naming before relying on it, since Salesforce periodically refreshes exam objectives to track new product capabilities, particularly around AI and activation features Take another free Google Cloud Certified Associate Data Practitioner practice test.
