50 Questions• 45 minutes

The ServiceNow Certified Implementation Specialist, IT Service Management (CIS-ITSM) exam tests whether you can configure and implement ServiceNow ITSM applications the way ServiceNow recommends, rather than simply administer them. It is aimed at implementers, consultants, and platform specialists who deploy Incident, Problem, Change, Request, and Catalog processes for customers or internal teams. This page summarizes the format, prerequisites, domain weights, and registration route, and flags which details to confirm with ServiceNow.

What this certification validates

ServiceNow describes the exam’s purpose as certifying that a successful candidate has the skills and essential knowledge to contribute to the configuration, implementation, and maintenance of ServiceNow ITSM applications. The emphasis is on implementation judgment. Questions ask you to choose features and approaches that meet business requirements while keeping the platform upgradeable, scalable, and maintainable. That means favoring baseline application behavior over heavy customization, and knowing which ITSM capability fits which requirement.

Because the credential sits in ServiceNow’s Certified Implementation Specialist family, it is different from the entry level administrator credential. It assumes you already know the platform and now need to show you can implement one product area well.

Eligibility and prerequisites

This is the section where older study guides often go wrong, so read it carefully.

ServiceNow’s current exam listing and January 2026 blueprint state that candidates must hold the Certified Implementation Specialist, Data Foundations (CMDB and CSDM) certification before registering. Recent guides report that this is the only formal prerequisite and that the Certified System Administrator credential is no longer listed, although many older articles still say otherwise. ServiceNow also gave people who already held CIS-ITSM a deadline of December 31, 2026 to add Data Foundations. A temporary suspension of the rule applied in early 2026, so do not rely on forum posts from that period.

ServiceNow also recommends practical experience: roughly six months of general platform experience and six months of implementation experience, plus familiarity with ITSM terminology. Completing the official training course was previously tied to the exam voucher. Reports from late 2025 say it is no longer strictly mandatory, but it remains recommended. Confirm the current rule before you buy anything.

Exam structure and format

The exam has approximately 60 questions and a 90 minute time limit. Question types include multiple choice with a single answer and multiple select, where you choose all that apply. Results are reported as pass or fail, and ServiceNow does not publish a fixed passing percentage in the places reviewed for this page. One third party site lists a 130 minute duration, but the weight of sources and ServiceNow related material point to 90 minutes.

Exam questions are drawn from official ServiceNow training materials, the product documentation, and the developer site. ServiceNow has stated that study material posted elsewhere online is not official and should not be used as your basis for preparation. Treat unofficial material as practice, not as a source of truth.

Domain breakdown

The January 2026 blueprint, as reported by recent guides, weights the domains as follows:

  • Incident Management: 25%

  • Change Management: 25%

  • Service Catalog and Request Management: 25%

  • Problem Management: 15%

  • Service Portfolio Management: 5%

  • Configuration Management Database: 5%

Three domains carry three quarters of the marks, so depth in Incident, Change, and Request matters more than breadth. Expect questions on process design, state models, assignment, approvals, SLAs, notifications, catalog items and record producers, and how the processes link to CMDB data. Older blueprints used different weights and included a Knowledge Management domain, so check the current exam guide on ServiceNow University before you plan your study time.

Registration process

Recent sources indicate that exams are now booked through ServiceNow University and delivered by Pearson VUE, replacing the older Webassessor system. Because the delivery platform, voucher handling, and prerequisite checks have changed more than once in the past year, follow the steps shown on the official exam page rather than any third party walkthrough. Expect to confirm your prerequisite certification, pay the exam fee or use a voucher, and choose a test center or online proctored slot where offered.

Cost is listed at USD 450, shown on ServiceNow University as 450 learning credits. Older sources mention a lower retake fee, but that figure may be out of date, so verify it before you schedule.

Career value

The CIS-ITSM credential is most useful for people whose work is delivering ServiceNow ITSM projects. Implementation partners often look for certified implementers when staffing customer projects, and internal platform teams use it as evidence that someone can scope and configure Incident, Change, and Catalog processes properly. It also pairs naturally with the Data Foundations credential now required to attempt it, which signals that you understand both the process layer and the CMDB and CSDM layer underneath it.

It will matter less for roles that never touch ITSM configuration. If you work mainly in another ServiceNow product area, another CIS exam is probably a better fit.

Preparing with AllExamQuestions.com

Reading the blueprint and working in a free Personal Developer Instance are the most direct ways to learn the platform. Once you have covered the domains, practice questions help you test recall and spot weak areas, especially the scenario questions that ask you to pick between configuration options. The free practice tests on AllExamQuestions.com are designed to be used that way, as a check on your understanding after you have studied the official material.
